Kaval
Kaval
The kaval is a chromatic end-blown flute traditionally played throughout the Balkans and Anatolia and is primarily associated with mountain shepherds. Unlike the transverse flute, the kaval is fully open at both ends, and is played by blowing on the sharpened edge of one end.
Eventhough it seems to be a simple ethnic instrument, the tuning holes transform it to a very dynamic flute giving 3 to 3.5 octaves, and in combination with the various mouth pieces, lots of magical sound colors!
We usually build 3 types of Kaval, depending on the material used: wood, copper and bone. Every material, naturally, gives us different harmonics.
Note that it takes us ca. 2 months to create a kaval. During this period you are in constant dialog with us so you can follow the production process as you wish!
